Thailand | Ruins of Ayutthaya
Saturday, March 21, 2015

Ayutthaya was the old capital and trading port of Siam (now Thailand). The Burmese invasion during the 18th century left the city in ruins. What remains is now a popular tourist destination.

Beheading of the Buddha statue is considered to be blasphemous. Lots of religious artifacts were destroyed, similar to today with ISIS destroying historic Iraqi art.

Side note: it's completely eye-rolling whenever I see a Buddha's head as art decor in some trendy rich person's house, trying to appear more cultured. It's the epitome of having Jesus' head as home decor.

And I'm not even a religious person by any means. It's just like seeing someone wearing a Native American headdress to Coachella. Absolutely no awareness of the cultural significance, and using it as a fashion accessory.

I digress.
